. national numbers show obama leadingy two to four points. some polls have it it a little bit more. it's in the swing states particularly critical ohio where the obama lead appears to be four- to eight-points, something in that range. there are two possible regulations. one is state-specific factors that are affecting voters in those states. for example, in virginia and ohio, a better-than-average national economy. but the other conclusion it seems to me that you have to arrive at is campaigns matter. the obama folks are running a good campaign with good ads, good messaging in these swing states. >> woodruff: that's where they're putting all these efforts. >> they're running more ads. they ran more ads in the spring. they had more money to run ads in the summer. that was a time when they were really attacking governor romney trying to undermine his credentials on the economy. the romney campaign for financial reasons and also following their own strategy didn't respond as fully. didn't spend as much money on ads as the obama group did. this is a good bet that the obama campaign is thin

president obama has had four mock debates with senator john kerry who is of course no stranger to presidential debates. he also i can tell you had one more practice session last night after president obama had a campaign event in las vegas. now, as you pointed out, both sides are really trying to tamper down expectations. lavishing praise on the other candidate. that is because there's so much at stake in these debates really for most candidates. mitt romney tried to turn his campaign around, but president obama trying to hold on to the narrow lead you mentioned in your introduction. really trying to tamp down expectations. should also point out that president obama holding his debate camp right here in nevada which is a key swing state. one of the states he's hoping to win in november. he has a small lead in this state according to the abc wall street journal poll. he's trying to garner excitement by holding his debate camp here. he had a campaign event last night in las vegas. campaign officials tell me we shouldn't be surprised to see him shake a few hands over the next few

-point margin for barack obama over the last three or four months. what that means in is the idea that obama could get 80% of the minority vote again is actually quite plausible based on these and other data. that looks like is what is going to get you. if he doesn't get 80, he will get 78 or 79. then the road at the bottom scioscia the breakout for college grad, some college or less or working class. the right and figures for likely voters, obama is doing a little bit better among white college graduate voters than he did in 2008, a to point margin, close to four points again. in the some college or less grip, he improved by 13 points which is somewhat better than he did in 2008 when he lost by 18. so remember what i was saying about the outlandishly large margins that mitt romney probably needs to be competitive among white working-class, the run up among white working-class voters. he's not anywhere close. that's the bottom line. this is true across many polls. you might see a margin of 20 points for mitt romney. you might see a margin of 22 points but nowhere do you see the ou
